How often should you check your plumbing?

I'm often asked how frequently one should check their plumbing. That's a difficult question to answer broadly because it really depends on the individual home and what kind of maintenance each part needs.

When it comes to checking your plumbing, hot water service is typically one of the most overlooked components. While it doesn't require frequent maintenance or inspection, it's important to check it every five to six years in order to make sure everything is running smoothly and safely. This includes checking for signs of corrosion, leaks, or blockages in any of the fixtures.

It's also important to check all of your other plumbing components at least once a year. This would include checking for leaks in any pipes and drains, flushing out sediment from water heaters, checking for corrosion or blockages in the drain lines, and inspecting the sump pump if you have one.

However, plumbing components like anodes, thermostats, or elements may need replacing periodically as well. It's important to check the manufacturer’s instructions to determine how often these components should be replaced.

Finally, it’s also good practice to inspect your plumbing annually or biannually for any signs of damage or deterioration. This includes looking for leaking faucets, loose pipes, slow drains, and other signs of plumbing problems.

In short, I recommend checking your plumbing at least once a year to ensure it is functioning properly, but you may need to check more often depending on the type of maintenance needed for specific components. If you are ever in doubt about how often you should be inspecting or maintaining something within your home's plumbing system, it is best to contact a professional plumber for guidance.

WHAT PLUMBING PIPES ARE BAD?

there are different types of plumbing pipes in Australia including copper, PVC, galvanised steel and PEX. Copper pipes are generally considered to be the most reliable as they are more resistant to corrosion and last longer than other materials. On the other hand, PVC is cheaper but it can become brittle over time and may need to be replaced sooner than copper or other materials.

Galvanised steel is also a popular choice, but it can corrode and rust over time. PEX is a relatively new type of plastic piping that has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its flexibility, ease of installation, and resistance to corrosion.

If you are wondering if newer plumbing pipes are any better, the answer is yes. Newer models come with watermarks and other approvals that ensure they will not leak or break as easily. If you live in an old home, however, there may be galvanized pipe present which can cause issues such as rusting and swelling from the inside- both of which affect your homes water pressure levels.

If your home has galvanized gas pipes, there is a chance of them leaking and costing you money. To avoid this overhead cost, consider doing some preventative maintenance on the pipes. Our team at Mitchells Plumbing Brisbane would be more than happy to help get rid of any potential problems.

HOW LONG IS A PLUMBER LIABLE?

Did you know that farmers are held responsible for the work they do, according to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission?

For nonstructural work, a plumber can be held liable for 6 to 12 months. This time frame depends on the type of plumbing completed. for example, a plumber who installs or repairs water heaters may be held liable for six months after the work is completed.

For structural plumbing, a plumber can be held liable for up to 12 months or even two years. This means that the plumber must stand by their work for the duration of the time frame. If any problems occur due to the plumber’s work, they are held liable and must take responsibility for fixing it.

Why do some plumbers charge so much?

Many people are often surprised by the cost of plumbing services and the fees associated with hiring a professional plumber. While it may seem like plumbers are charging too much for their services, there is a good reason behind their pricing. Hiring a qualified and experienced plumber will ensure that all of your plumbing needs are taken care of in a professional and effective manner.

The cost of hiring a plumber will depend on the complexity of the work that needs to be done. Plumbers will typically charge a higher rate for more complex jobs that require specialised tools and expertise. Plumbers may also charge extra fees for after-hours services or emergency calls.

Additionally, it is important to consider the cost of quality materials and professional tools that are necessary for plumbing work. Plumbers have to invest in having the best equipment so that they can serve customers as efficiently as possible. The cost of these items needs to be taken into consideration when pricing our services.

When it comes to plumbing services, you will often get what you pay for. While some companies may offer attractive prices, the quality of their work may not be up to standard. It is important to do your research when choosing a plumber and make sure that you are getting the best value for your money.
